Presider coming from out of state

If we are having a priest come from out of state to celebrate our wedding, what is the etiquette for compensation? Do we pay for his travel expenses, hotel, etc?

you pay for their transportation and hotel definitely.  Other expenses, depends on the person.

In our case, we only paid for the hotel and his meal at the RD.   He said his fee included transportation and other expenses.   At $650 for what mounted to 1 hour of work, I agreed that was covered in the fee.

ETA - make he can perform the ceremony in that state.  If not, make sure you have someone there who can.

  • I would definitely pay for at least travel and hotel, as well as, invite them to the RD and reception.

Some Priests are have different rules too...Our Priest was a Franciscan Friar, so with their vow of poverty, they do not have extra spending money laying around. We also picked him up from the airport, paid for his hotel, flights, and all of his meals, then had my dad take him back to the airport sunday morning.
  • In addition, I would make damn sure the officiant is licensed in the state where you are marrying.  People have gotten nasty surprises when they went to file the certificate after the wedding.

Proud to be an old married hag!! image
