dryer questions

can you put sneakers in a dryer? (and would you?)

if your dryer breaks (heats, but the drum stops rotating) is it something fixable? (or do you think the home warranty people will pronounce it dead and buy us a new one?)

Re: dryer questions

  • yes and yes.

No rotation might just be a belt.
  • I have put sneakers ina dryer--w/ towels or its unbearably loud.  But ti's ahrd on both the dryer and the sneakers.

I've found most things like that pretty fixable...usually seomthing like a belt.
(but, I shouldn't be taken as gospel on this--my dryer is literally older than I am.  I'm guessing dryers older than 30- years are much more 'fixable' than new ones that have thins like computers :)
  • I'm with GBCK...I'd put the sneakers in the dry, on low and with some towels (I would use towels you don't particularly care about just in case).

Dryers are incredibly fixable appliances.  There's not much that goes wrong with them that can't be fixed or replaced.
  • oh our dryer is probably older than me - we got it from the old owners of our Philly house.

it stopped heating for a while and we almost replaced it, but the warranty company managed to find the part.

i kinda want them to fix it just so i can do some laundry, but at the same time, i'd like a new (free) dryer.
  • We refuse to pay for a service call on our dryer--but we got some advice from the washer repair guy (under warranty) and I managed to find the 35 year old service manual online...
we can order parts off ebay.  For $10 we replaced the thermostat last year.

I'm kinda hoping it breaks because if we can't fix it ourselves, I'll finally get a new dryer :-P
  • There are a lot of videos for repairs for appliance repairs.

My dryer has a little rack you can put in for dewrinkling that I also use for tennis shoes.
  • i put my shoes in post warrior dash - on the 2nd cycle one got stuck between the drum and the back - i think that's what broke it.

service call is $60 through the warranty company and the work is guaranteed - it's a little bit of a gamble, but we have gotten 2 new furnaces for the cost of building code upgrades - so the warranty paid for itself last year.
  • I think it depends.  I mean, if they aren't really high impact bearing shoes, sure.  If so...no way.

  • you guys were right - it was the belt

    all fixed.
  • there are dryer bags that you could buy specifically for sneakers. you put the sneakers in the bag, and attach the bag to the dryer door, so they are inside the dryer but don't flop around and make a ton of noise.
